Founded in 1997, and with alumni practicing in 22 states, The International University of the Health Sciences School of Medicine is accredited by the Government of the Federation of St. Christopher & Nevis (St. Kitts), and is listed in the World Health Organization’s World Directory of Medical Schools, 7th Edition. The WHO listings are now maintained online by the University of Copenhagen in the Avicenna Directories.
IUHS uses a innovative, low cost distributed education model (ie many locations) to transform the learning experience and underlying economics of medical education, with the goal of addressing the global shortage, inequitable distribution, and demographic representation of healthcare professionals, especially in primary care. The mission includes redefining medical education so it is relevant to the needs of society today and in the future. Indeed, we continually ask, “How can we better educate and nurture a new generation of physicians and prepare them to deliver 21st health care in a rapidly changing world?” The University is a driver of social transformation by broadening the pool of future doctors and nurses beyond the narrow demographics of traditional medical schools.
IUHS combines online lectures (Blackboard), integrated practicals (Integrated Clinical Medicine), moderated study groups (Virtual Library portal) and customized gap assessment of content knowledge and retention (Academic Enhancement) to prepare students to deliver the best healthcare that is appropriate within the social and cultural contexts they will practice.

The MD Program
The pre-clinical curriculum is set up as a case based organ systems approach to medicine that establishes the connections between knowledge and practice immediately. The extensive use of virtual patient cases and study resources to compliment the lectures creates a stimulating learning environment for each student. The basic sciences program consists of lectures, practicals, tutorials, and moderated group study which provides students with the knowledge and understanding needed to start clinical medicine. In addition, there is the development and understanding of knowledge self-assessment which will prepare students for a world where medical practice is rapidly evolving.
After pre-clinical studies, students spend the 80 weeks of their medical study program in clinical facilities, often called “rotations” or “clerkships”. In the clinical facilities, the students learn by ‘apprenticeship’ to specialists in the various clinical disciplines. By working under close supervision with experts, students learn to treat patients and to acquire the skills of communications, interviewing, history taking, physical examination and medical procedures. This is accomplished in hospital and clinic based models. Rotations are broken down into two sequential components: 48 weeks of prescribed core rotations and 32 weeks of elective rotations.
