American International School of Medicine

The premedical program is designed to bridge the gap between High School and Medical School. This program ranges from a concise 6 month to 2 years depending on student placement. Students who have undergraduate credits and still require additional credit courses to enter into the MD program would benefit from accelerated 6 month to 12 program. The 2 year Pre-medical Program is designed for students who have not yet received any undergraduate credits and/or High School grades in Physical or Biological Sciences. The courses being offered are basic undergraduate studies in Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Verbal Reasoning and Mathematics. After completion of the premedical program students who have passed the Premedical Comprehensive exams would be promoted into the first year of the four years Medical Degree program. The premedical program is delivered at our Georgetown, Guyana Campus. There are three semesters per calendar year. Students can apply for the program in September (fall), January (winter) or May (spring) semester. The AISM MD curriculum integrates both Basic Science and Clinical Science experience with detailed study throughout the four years of medical school. We place emphasis on the following:

The Basic Science program is divided into Five Semesters of 16 weeks each. This program is taught at the AISM Guyana and starts in January, May or September of the academic year. At the end of this two year program, students must pass the AISM Comprehensive Basic Science Examination before proceeding to the following two years of Clinical Sciences. We encourage our students to take the STEP 1 USMLE exams before proceeding into their clinical sciences. A comprehensive 6 weeks Step 1 review program is available in Guyana and Atlanta, Georgia. Our Basic Sciences Curriculum is educationally comparable to the first two years of medical school in the USA. In the first four semesters students are taught the basic sciences courses in classroom setting at our main campus in Guyana, South America. Several of the courses require laboratory sessions per week and field studies. Moreover, our introduction to medicine program that begins in first semester entails credit hours in the hospital setting where our students first begin to develop Patient Physician Communication skills. We set a high percentage pass mark in all our courses (75-100%) to ensure that students develop intense study habits. We make available text books, board review books, question banks, journals, basic medical instruments and internet access for research available to students. Our courses are taught by trained doctors who utilize computer-based imaging, anatomy models, medical instruments etc. All exams are given in USMLE format, both written and computerized. Students are encouraged to make good use of all resource materials posted on the student page. Students can also apply for a Master’s (MS) in Medical Sciences which includes a research project, thesis development and defense. All Basic Sciences Courses are being taught in Guyana, South America.

The Clinical Sciences Program is comprised of 78 weeks of core and elective clinical rotations at hospitals in the US, England and Guyana. In this program, students participate in the patient care process while rotating through various medical specialties, under the guidance of the clinical faculty and staff physicians. At the end of each core rotation, students will be tested and evaluated by the respective clinical faculty. Students must pass AISM Clinical Science Comprehensive Examination before he or she can be considered as completing the academic requirements leading to a Medical Doctor Degree from AISM. The following are core Clinical classes (Total of 56wks):

1) Internal Medicine (12wks)
2) Surgery (12wks)
3) Family Medicine (8wks)
4) Obstetrics & Gynecology (8wks)
5) Pediatrics (8wks)
6) Psychiatry (8wks)

The remaining 22 weeks provide the student with an opportunity to explore various medical specialties. Specialty classes are taught in 4wks sessions. These may include, but not limited to:
