Founded in 2003, International American University College of Medicine (IAUCOM) is located in the heart of the Caribbean Islands, in the southern district (Vieux Fort) of St. Lucia, West Indies (W.I.). The University is chartered and authorized by the Government of St Lucia to confer various undergraduate and postgraduate degrees including the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree. We offer a state of the art curriculum in medical education, using the latest technology and teaching methods which is based on the U.S. model and is delivered by a team of expert faculty.
Every medical school has its own unique characteristics, a distinct personality and goals for the future. INSURANCE
Student Health Insurance
Students are required to carry health insurance coverage for the duration of their medical school program. Proof of coverage is necessary upon matriculation and is required by hospitals prior to students beginning clinical rotations.
Your purchased or current insurance policy should cover the cost of medical evacuation to a nearby facility for emergency care in the event it cannot be handled on the island.
Students interested in low cost health insurance while on the island are encouraged to contact GTM Group of Insurance Companies. GTM has an office located downtown Vieux Fort, minutes’ walk away from campus. They can be reached at 758-454-6584 or 758-453-6723.
IAU will purchase health insurance from GTM on your behalf and bill it to your student account if you do not acquire it or show proof of comparable coverage.
Accreditation Details
The MD Program
The faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences developed a unique program to serve the needs of students, from varying backgrounds, interested in pursuing careers in medicine. The College of Arts and Sciences offers a boutique program with highly individualized instruction in courses that are required prerequisites for admission to the College of Medicine’s MD program.
Enrollment in the College of Arts and Sciences will better prepare students for success in the IAU College of Medicine. The College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Medicine share some faculty, facilities, and other resources enabling pre-medical students the opportunity to become familiar with the campus, faculty, learning resources, and island life before beginning the more challenging MD curriculum. In addition, pre-medical students interact with successful medical students in the basic sciences, who provide supplemental instruction in premedical prerequisites and who also serve as lab assistants, peer advisors, and tutors.
Acceptance into the College of Medicine Program is guaranteed from the College of Arts and Sciences if the student successfully completes the pre-med program with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 GPA.
Combined Pre-Med/MD Program
The Combined Pre-Med/MD program offers a foundation for basic medicine to accommodate students from different academic backgrounds prior to beginning the Doctor of Medicine curriculum. Evaluation of an applicant’s prior educational background will determine eligibility and appropriate placement into the Pre-Med/MD program. Students in the combined program will complete four terms of undergraduate coursework before beginning the MD curriculum. (The entire program can be completed in five-and-a-half years.)
In many medical schools students are exposed solely to classroom-based didactics during the duration of their basic science coursework. After approximately two years, they are then required to apply their knowledge to actual cases. At International American University College of Medicine, similar to many of the best medical schools in the United States, we take a more progressive approach to medical education in that our students are immediately exposed to a case-based, problem-oriented curriculum (“problem based learning”, or PBL), which places far more emphasis on learning that is active (researching, discussing) rather than passive (sitting, memorizing). Our curriculum helps build students’ confidence in their own presentation skills which must be honed by the time they are presenting their cases to a room full of medical doctors.
IAU students are required to pass the USMLE Step 1 exam before the end of the bridge semester. Once this is completed they may begin clinical rotations in the U.S. The 3rd and 4th years of medical school consist of the Clinical Sciences and are mainly comprised of clinical rotations (clerkships) under the supervision of a physician (preceptor). Our Clinical Campus is located in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, and all affiliated hospitals have ACGME accredited residency programs.
