Founded as an independent School of Medicine in 1976, St. George’s University opened its doors to students beginning in January 1977. It has evolved into a top center of international education, drawing students and faculty from 140 countries to the Caribbean island of Grenada, in the West Indies. Students attending SGU enjoy the benefits of a thriving multicultural environment on the True Blue campus, offering all the amenities and technologically advanced facilities of a world-class institution.

The University’s more than 20,000 graduates include physicians, veterinarians, scientists, and public health and business professionals across the world. The University offers medical and veterinary medical degrees in the Schools of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, and independent and dual graduate degrees in the sciences, public health, and business. Undergraduate degree programs are also available through its School of Arts and Sciences, and students may build on their education by pursuing a degree in the School of Graduate Studies. The nine colleges of St. George’s University’s MD program are tight knit learning communities. Each college represents an academic family that supports the wellness of students and fosters the academic, personal, and professional development of its membership. Each college will have its own director and associate director, as well as dedicated personnel for student support, including academic advisors, faculty, learning strategists, advisors, and other support staff. In addition to four-, five-, six-, and seven-year Doctor of Medicine programs, the School of Medicine awards master’s degrees in public health, epidemiology, microbiology, and other sciences, as well as PhDs in many disciplines. The seven–year Doctor of Medicine program is designed for students who have secondary school credentials who need to study a complete course in the foundation sciences necessary to be successful in the medical degree program. With a focus on preclinical sciences, social sciences, and humanities, the seven–year entry point offers this necessary foundation.

Dual BS/MD Degree Option
By entering SGU’s seven-year preclinical program, you may be eligible to earn a Bachelor of Science on your way to completing your Doctor of Medicine. The BS/MD option allow you to complete your undergraduate degree in three years of undergraduate and preclinical courses.

Details about the Basic Sciences:

The first two years of the four-year MD program concentrate on the traditional basic science disciplines on the True Blue campus in Grenada. Laboratory experience is an integral part of these first two years, along with small group discussions designed for problem-based learning and early integration of the clinical medicine into basic sciences at the General Hospital in Grenada.

Students may also consider completing the first year of basic science education on the campus of Northumbria University in the United Kingdom as part of the Keith B. Taylor Global Scholars Program.

Details about the Clinical Sciences:

SGU’s clinical program is delivered at 70+ affiliated hospitals and clinical centers in the United States, Grenada, and the United Kingdom, ensuring a wide patient population base with a breadth of clinical exposure within a cohesive, centrally managed clinical curriculum. SGU has faculty members and program directors at each affiliated hospital.
