About
Xavier University School of Medicine (XUSOM) was founded in 2004 and is chartered by the government of Aruba with authorization by the Ministry of Education of Aruba. Located in Oranjestad, the capital of Aruba, the students are provided with a safe and secure atmosphere to focus on their studies. As the largest city in Aruba, Oranjestad can easily be reached by direct flights from all over the world. Our system-based courses are taught by distinguished doctors from the U.S. who are committed to teaching. The student to teacher ratio is 10:1, which provides students with an individualized learning environment. All labs and classrooms have state of the art equipment, including LCD projectors, charts and anatomy museums. Plasticized human cadavers are used for teaching and dissection. Anatomical dissections are performed at the Dr. Horacio E. Oduber Hospital, the local hospital in Aruba. Many shopping malls, government offices and fast food restaurants are located within walking distance of school. The close proximity to the central bus station allows students easy access to all parts of the island. The campus itself is a newly renovated, modern facility comprised of over 125,000 square feet. The entire facility has central air conditioning and is equipped with wireless technology throughout. Students are guaranteed secure access to the campus at all times, as XUSOM has nighttime and weekend security officers on site. The campus encompasses a vibrant multicultural atmosphere where all students feel accepted and comfortable.

The MD Program
The pre-medical curriculum emphasizes biology and chemistry as it relates to medicine while integrating math, physics, and behavioral sciences. The curriculum is consistent with XUSOM’s integrated medical curriculum, and will ease the transition from pre-medical science into basic science. It presents fundamental scientific concepts from a medical perspective and incorporates USMLE Step 1 familiarization from Day 1. All of our school’s Pre-Med students successfully completing the Pre-Med Program will automatically gain advancement into the Basic Science Component of our MD program.
Xavier University School of Medicine has earned its reputation for academic excellence one successful student at a time. We’ve combined a rigorous, system-based curriculum with a supportive learning environment that helps students stay on track to achieve their dreams. XUSOM also offers students a unique semester to not only prepare them for the USMLE Step 1 Exam, but also for a smooth transition into clinical medicine in the United States. Students gain valuable knowledge during this time and a clear comprehension of the healthcare system and post graduate medical training in the United States.
The entry into the Clinical Science Program is the most exciting event in every medical student’s career. This is the moment for which they have prepared their entire lives and will, for most, be their very first contact with real patients in real clinical settings. XUSOM has prepared a robust clinical program which will ready the student doctor to enter any field of medicine. Almost all of our rotations are situated in the United States with the strongest concentration of hospitals being in our three centralized “hub” cities of New York, Baltimore, and Chicago. These locations are where most of our core rotations are offered but there is a vast array of locations where students may choose to spend their electives. At the discretion of the Dean of Clinical Science, students with strong academic performance may be given preferential rotation placement. The program is structured in such a manner as to allow a student to gain licensure in most of the United States. Each of a student’s core rotations is spent at a hospital which hosts an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-approved residency program in the respective core specialty. Every site is held to comparable standards of teaching, evaluation, faculty development, and study resources. A student will gain all the knowledge and skills necessary to pass Step 2 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) and compete for any coveted United States residency position. Our students have rotated and gone on to train and practice in Canada as well. The clinical program is 84 weeks in duration.
